Days 25-28- Catch Up Fever

doronjosimaDay 25 - A song that makes you laugh
"Moskau" by Dschingis Khan. Why, yes, this song *was* a Eurovision Song Contest entry. They always have the cheesiest songs for that, which is why it fascinates me. However, I am a big fan of Buffalax's "translations" of songs, and his mis-heard lyrics are the ones I remember. Other notable internet meme amusements include "Benny Lava", "Irrational Exuberance" and "Tunak Tunak Tun". What do you want from me, I'm a giant nerd.
Day 26 - A song that you can play on an instrument
"Poor Wandering One" from the Pirates of Penzance by Gilbert and Sullivan. I *used* to be able to play this on the flute. I took years of private flute lessons as a tween and teen (and was once quite good at it), and this song was one in my exercise book that I had to play a lot. My teacher had a sense of humor though, and crossed out "One" and wrote in "Mind", since my attention had a tendency to wander. Thus, in my family, this song is known as "Poor Wandering Mind". Someday, I'll have flute lessons again, I have my flute still.
Day 27 - A song that you wish you could play
"Fantaisie" by Claude-Paul Taffanel. Performed here by James Galway, my flute idol. (Not that there are a lot of flutists out there to idolize, really...) I never learned this piece, which is a shame.
Day 28 - A song that makes you feel guilty
"Londonderry Air" (aka "Danny Boy"), but only when performed on a flute. It reminds me that I shouldn't have given up playing in a fit of teenage rebellion. I feel guilty that I stopped playing- and for frivolous reasons (I didn't want to have to practice an hour a day every day, I didn't want to have to go to lessons every week, etc.). I was actually good at it, and I quit just because I was a teenager. Now that I'm an adult, I think how much money my parents paid for lessons and my flute (silver-plated, open-hole, and thus NOT a cheap one), and I feel guilty for stopping.

Date: 2011-03-28 02:03 pm (UTC)2. That is such a flute song, I bet it sounded really cool when you played it! I used to play the flute but now I play the oboe. They're very different but I still mess around with flute from time to time.
3. James Galway is a bamf. That's a neat piece, too, though I'm sure anything he plays sounds neat.
4. Yes, that's a very nice flute! I bailed on flute too early to learn how to play an open-holed instrument. You should start playing again, it's fun when you actually want to do it. :]

Date: 2011-03-29 04:16 am (UTC)I've got to find time to try playing again, it's been easily 20 years since I played though. Every so often I get my flute out and try some scales, and I still have decent embouchure, but I am forgetting fingerings. The cats despise the flute noises. XD
